Austra

Projekta apraksts:

Project description:

Austra was born out of love for Latvian heritage in lettering and typography from the early 1920s until now with an aim to rationalise hand drawn and naive letterforms into a functioning typeface with a Latvian backbone.

The process involved a deep research into works of Cirulis, Madarnieks, Strunke and other Latvian artists who experimented with type to detect common characteristics. Further experiments of applying round and clunky features resulted in a typeface that embraces robust and sturdy letterforms in combination with uid and geometric roundness.

The nal outcome consists of type family of 4 weights plus a matching italic and works great in text sizes as intended at the beginning of the project and has been used in the reprint of Krisjanis Barons 'The Description of Our Homeland. The glitter of the text — combination of round and cornered shape — is the root for its name Austra (latv. sunrise).
